A Toolkit for Your Creative Practice

Seven rules.
Use them when you need them.

This is a working reference, not a one-time read. Each rule is a tool for staying connected to your creative work — on ordinary days, not just inspired ones. Start with whichever rule feels most relevant, and return whenever you're stuck.

The Seven Rules

The Ten Minute Rule

Set a timer. Work for 10 minutes. Stop when it ends.

  • Use a visible timer. A countdown you can see keeps the session bounded — and the boundary is why it works. You're allowed to stop. That's the point.

  • Choose your task before you sit down. Don't spend the 10 minutes deciding. Pick one thing in advance and start the moment the timer starts.

  • Don't move the goalposts. Ten minutes is the commitment. If you keep going, that's a bonus. The win is starting today and returning tomorrow.

  • Same time, every day. Consistency removes the daily negotiation. When the when is already decided, all you do is show up.

  • A rough 10 minutes beats a perfect zero. The session doesn't have to feel productive. It just has to happen.

The Judgment Rule

During your 10 minutes, your only job is to create. Just get it out.

  • Creation and evaluation are different sessions. Not different minutes. One window to make. A separate window to judge. Never both at once.

  • Tag it and keep moving. When the urge to fix appears, mark it and continue. No deleting. No rewriting mid-session.

  • Volume first. Your only job is to generate raw material. Quantity now, quality later — the editor comes after the maker.

  • Let the idea exist before you decide what it is. Premature judgment doesn't improve ideas. It prevents them.

The Deadline Rule

Set a short-term deadline for tonight or tomorrow. When it arrives, ship something.

  • Name the deadline before you start. Set it first, before you touch anything.

  • "Ship something" means one thing. A voice memo. A paragraph. A rough sketch. It needs to exist outside your head — that's the whole job.

  • Tell someone. A deadline with a witness has weight. One message changes the stakes enough to matter.

  • Missing once doesn't break it. Avoiding deadlines does. If you miss it, reset to tomorrow.

The One Page Rule

Decide in advance what "enough" looks like, and stop there.

  • Define "one page" for your medium before you sit down. For a writer: one page. A songwriter: a basic structure. A designer: a wireframe. Name the container first.

  • Stop while it still feels unfinished. That open edge is what you grab onto tomorrow. Leave a door open.

  • Constraints are focus, not limits. A sonnet is 14 lines — always. The container shapes the thinking.

  • Finishing the smallest version that counts is still finishing something. Lower the entry cost.

The One Person Rule

Send the work to one person you trust.

  • Send it before you talk yourself out of it. No long explanation. No apology for what it isn't yet. Just the work and a simple ask.

  • Specify what you need. A witness, a reaction, feedback, or just someone to tell. Name it.

  • They don't owe you a response. The point is breaking the private-rehearsal loop — getting it outside your head.

  • Make it reciprocal. Ask what they're working on. The exchange only sustains when it flows both ways.

The Inspiration Rule

Start anyway. Let inspiration catch up.

  • Motion creates motivation — not the other way around. Don't wait to feel ready. Inspiration shows up once you're already moving.

  • Make your entry point as small as possible. Open the document. Pick up the instrument. One physical move is enough to begin.

  • If nothing comes, do something adjacent. Listen. Read old work. Sketch. You're still in the practice.

  • Identity follows action. You become a creator by creating. The label is earned in the doing — not before it.

The Return Rule

Just return.

  • Habits die from shame, not gaps. The story you tell yourself about the gap is what breaks the practice — not the gap itself.

  • Come back the same way you started: small. No punishment. No making up for lost time. Ten minutes today, and you're back.

  • You're not restarting. You're continuing. The practice doesn't reset to zero when you step away.

  • Don't add a story to the gap. No commentary, no judgment. Just do 10 minutes today. That's the whole instruction.


Using the Rules With Others

Bringing the practice
into a group

A few simple ways to use these rules inside a writing circle, creative group, or accountability practice. These aren't workshops — they're lightweight adaptations of the same principles. Pick the ones that fit where your group is.

Shared Timer

10 min 3–10

Everyone creates at the same time, in silence, to the same countdown. The shared timer makes the ten-minute commitment visible and collective — which makes it easier to start.

How it works

  1. 1

    One person picks a prompt — a theme, a first line, an image. Keep it open.

  2. 2

    Set a shared visible timer. Someone sets the vibe: a playlist, ambient sound, or silence.

  3. 3

    Everyone works until the timer ends. No talking, no sharing mid-session.

  4. 4

    Optional: one sentence from each person on what came out. No explanation, no apology.

Group Ship

5 min 3–12

Each person names one thing they'll ship before the session ends. Public commitment turns an intention into a deadline with real weight. Reporting back closes the loop.

How it works

  1. 1

    Open with a quick round: "I will ship _____ before we close today." One sentence each.

  2. 2

    Everyone works. The facilitator holds the clock.

  3. 3

    Close with: "I shipped ___." or "I didn't — here's what I'll do instead." No judgment either way.

Accountability Pairs

Ongoing Any size

Each pair commits to being each other's one person between sessions — sending work before it's ready, not waiting for the right moment. Rotating pairs keeps the circle reciprocal.

How it works

  1. 1

    At the end of each session, pair up randomly. New pairs each time.

  2. 2

    Each person commits to sending their pair one piece of work before the next session — however small.

  3. 3

    The receiver commits to acknowledging it. Not critiquing — just witnessing.

  4. 4

    Open the next session: "Did you send? Did you receive?" One sentence each.

Check-In Round

5–10 min Any size

One honest sentence to open every session. Naming the gap — and the return — out loud normalizes both. It makes the practice forgiving by design.

How it works

  1. 1

    Open each session with a single-sentence round. The prompt: "Since we last met, I ___."

  2. 2

    One sentence. No elaboration required. "I made nothing and I'm here anyway" is a complete answer.

  3. 3

    No responses, no follow-up questions. The group receives it. Then move into the session.

Pass the Work

20–30 min 3–8

Create for 10 minutes, then pass your work to the person on your left with no explanation. They continue it for another 10 minutes. Good for groups that have built some trust — the handoff removes judgment before it starts.

How it works

  1. 1

    Everyone starts their own work for 10 minutes — writing, sketching, whatever the medium.

  2. 2

    Pass your work to the person on your left. No explanation. Immediate handoff.

  3. 3

    Everyone continues the work they received for another 10 minutes. Build on it, take it somewhere unexpected.

  4. 4

    Return the work. One observation from each person — not a critique, just what they noticed.
